Chase Sapphire Reserve Travel Coverage

If you’re delayed by a carrier for 6+ hours that requires an overnight stay, you will receive $500 per person. Finally, if you or family members checked or carry on luggage is damaged by a carrier, you are assured up to $3,000 per person.

Redemption Options

Redeem through the Chase UR Travel Portal at a rate of 1.5 cents per point.Redeem at a rate of 1 cent per mile for recent travel (past 90 days) through a statement credit.
Redeem for Gift Cards at about 1 cent per point depending on temporary promotions.Redeem through Capital One Travel at the same 1 cent per mile rate.
Redeem for Gift Cards at about 1 cent per point depending on temporary promotions.

While their redemption options are very similar, it’s important to note that Chase Sapphire offers much higher value than Capital One when redeeming points through their respective travel portals. With a 50% bonus through Chase you’ll see far higher value for you points in that respect, and when traveling on your chosen airline, hotel or car rental company – it’ll look like you used cash to purchase your booking so you’ll earn points there as well. This is, in my opinion, a huge plus on the Chase side of things.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to travel rewards credit cards, the Chase Sapphire Reserve stands out as one of the best. It provides excellent travel coverage on trips as well as primary car rental insurance domestically and internationally. Additionally, the Reserve provides its members the opportunity to earn some serious points geared towards travel. With appealing sign-up bonuses, higher-than-average reward rates and excellent redemption value, the Reserve offers more travel value than its competitor, the Capital One Venture X. The Venture X card also offers a wide range of travel benefits and credit card rewards, but the rewards structure is not necessarily designed to maximize every travel purchase. Furthermore, the Venture X does not provide the same travel coverage as the reserve which is another aspect in which this rewards program trails behind the Chase, despite also offering a primary rental car collision damage waiver benefit.

Redemption options are very similar, but Chase has the slight edge due to the higher value of points when redeeming through their travel portal. That said, Capital One has a few more transfer partners, and that may be a deciding factor for some.

Another thing to note is that both cards provide the opportunity to transfer to Singapore Airlines, Air France, Air Canada and British Airways miles. If you have both cards and institute a points earning strategy that maximizes each purchase based on the advantages and bonuses of each card you can then combine the resulting points in one of those programs for bigger rewards like international and/or first and business class reward tickets.
