Orbitz website offers a wide range of options for travelers looking to book flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, vacation packages and other travel services. As an all in one travel agency, Orbitz has an efficient search engine that allows customers to easily find relevant deals for their travel needs. In this article we will take a closer look at the Orbitz Rewards program, benefits offered and elite status tiers.

Orbucks Points

Orbucks is the loyalty currency of Orbitz. You to start earning orbucks/points every time you make a qualifying booking. The higher your status level, the more orbucks you will earn on purchases. One of the major drawbacks to this rewards program is that your orbucks will expire 365 days after they are earned, so be sure to use them before they expire. As a member you will have access to exclusive ‘member only deals’ that will help you save on your travel purchases. Additionally, Orbitz has an Unreal Deals option for its members that lists its best package deals for your travel needs.

Tier Levels

Orbitz Rewards offers three tier levels — Blue, Silver and Gold. The additional benefits and bonus points offered at each tier level are as follows:

Blue

Upon signup, members are automatically enrolled in the Blue tier.

  • Receive 2X the value of your points when redeemed for a VIP hotel.
  • Ability to use your points to book award travel for friends and family.
  • 2X points per $1 spent for hotel, package, car rentals and activities.
  • 1X points per $5 spent on airfare in addition to earning frequent flyer miles with the individual carrier.
  • No blackout dates when redeeming points.
  • $25 off your next hotel booking with a minimum of 3,500 points .

Silver

Reach this tier when your spending hits $5,000 on eligible bookings — or — stay 7 qualifying hotel nights in a 12 month period. All of the benefits in the blue tier are included, as well as:

  • 10X bonus points on all eligible bookings.
  • 250 bonus points for VIP hotel bookings.
  • Additional exclusive travel offers.
  • Priority customer service.

Gold

To reach the highest tier level members must have spent $10,000 on eligible bookings — or — have 15 qualifying hotel stays in a 12 month period. All of the benefits in the blue and silver tiers are included. Additional benefits are as follows:

  • 30X bonus points on all eligible bookings.
  • Room upgrades with flexible check in/out options at VIP hotels.

Hotels

Orbitz has an impressive selection of hotel offers through its search engine that allows you to compare nightly prices at varies hotels including Wyndham, Marriott and Hyatt. Be sure to look out for ‘insider price’ deals listed above the nightly price. Unlike airline purchases through Orbitz, members are not allowed to earn hotel rewards in addition to orbucks. With this in mind, it is likely more beneficial to book your hotel stay directly with your preferred hotel rewards program unless you’re not as interested in elite status with a single hotel chain.

Flights

Orbitz has a wide selection of flight options available through its search engine and allows its members to compare prices for flights on most major carriers. Carriers include Delta, United, Virgin Atlantic, JetBlue, and others. One of the main positive feature of Orbitz Rewards is that it allows its members to earn airline miles/points in addition to orbucks. Additionally, your status level with your preferred airline rewards program will also be honored. You’ll have access to the benefits connected to your status such as priority boarding, and free checked luggage — so be sure to include your frequent flyer information when booking. Also note, you can add your frequent flyer info by looking up the booking on your preferred carrier’s website using the carrier booking confirmation number provided by Orbitz you complete your booking.

Car rentals

Searching for a car rental through Orbitz is simple and is one of the most discounted items on the site. You will have the option to search for car type and compare daily prices from various car rental companies including Enterprise, Avis and Budget. Be sure to check with your credit card company before declining insurance since not all credit cards provide insurance coverage like the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Additionally, you’re likely out of luck if you want to add your car rental loyalty information to the reservation – it looks like you only have the option to earn airline miles when reserving on Orbitz.com.

Conclusion

Orbitz is one of the leading online travel agencies that offers a wide range of services to help people plan and book their vacations. One of the major downfalls of this rewards program is that points expire after 12 months. However, having the ability to earn orbucks points in addition to airline miles is a nice perk. Orbitz provides a simple user friendly all in one search for travel needs and allows its members to compare prices from various vendors. Additionally, members have access to special rates on select hotels and flights, making it easier for them to plan their trips within a budget.

Overall, Orbitz Rewards is an attractive loyalty program for those who may not belong to or have elite status with many other frequent travel programs. It’s probably most beneficial for people who take one to three trips a year and like to bundle hotel, flight and car rental together — which can provide significant savings. And if you spend a cumulative amount above the threshold for elite status with Orbitz, it could be a go-to program for future bookings.
