Redemption Options

The miles earned on purchases can be redeemed for cash back at any time and without minimum amount limits. You don’t have to wait for a certain threshold or worry about blackout dates. Cardholders also have the option to redeem miles for statement credits on eligible travel purchases such as airfare, hotels, and car rentals. According to Discover’s website, Discover it miles credit card is accepted at 99% of places that take credit cards nationwide. This provides excellent flexibility in redeeming miles for various airlines purchases with major carries like Delta, United and Southwest or hotel stays with Marriott or Hilton Resorts. Additionally, cardholders have the option to redeem miles for purchases with Amazon as well as making payments with PayPal.

0% APR Period

Discover offers an enticing 15-month introductory period of 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers. After the 15 month period, Discover will tack on an APR of 17.24% to 28.25% depending on your credit history. The 0% 15 month APR is a nice feature to this travel card option since most travel credit cards with no annual fee are not offered. This would participially come handy if cardholders are expecting to make a big purchase or pulling the trigger on the trip they have been planning for years. One thing to note is that the 0% APR only applies to purchases and balance transfers, not cash advances. So if you plan on using your card for cash advances, be aware that you will be charged interest.

Final Thoughts

The main advantage of the Discover it Miles travel credit card is the 2X miles match on purchases in the first year of card activation date. This allows cardholders to accumulate miles and redeem them for statement credits toward travel purchases or cash back. The big question with this card is why doesn’t it offer any additional travel perks, and what other than calling the points miles makes this a travel credit card? Additionally, why would Discover limit the statement credit option to travel purchases when you can use the “miles” they offer for cash back?

Discover it Miles Travel credit card is an option for those who want to earn miles on all their purchases without having to pay an annual fee and maybe for those who can take good advantage of the first year match bonus & 0% APR – effectively upping the earning rate to 3 miles per dollar. However, for those who travel frequently and value travel perks, this card is not the best choice.
